FRIDAY 25th JUNE 2010 08:30(BST)

THIS DAY IN WW2 (25.6.40)
In French Indochina... The Japanese put pressure on the Vichy French authorities in Indochina to block the transit of supplies to the Chinese Nationalists. They wish the rail line into China closed and a Japanese mission to be allowed in to inspect this.

In the United States... New considerably increased taxes are introduced which bring an additional 2,200,000 into the tax roll who have never formerly paid income tax. These increases of course reflect the armament expenditure.

On the Western Front... The Franco-German armistice comes into force. 60% of France, including the channel and Atlantic coast, the north and half of central France is to remain under German military occupation, the French to pay occupation costs. The remaining 40%, mainly south-east France and the overseas colonies, including the Mediterranean coast, to remain unoccupied and self-governed under the dictatorship of Marshal Petain, whose government is based at Vichy. French loyalties are therefore divided between supporters of the armstice and Petain, and the resistance led by De Gaulle.
