WEDNESDAY 30th JUNE 2010 08:00(BST)

THIS DAY IN WW2 (30.6.40)
In the English Channel... The German forces begin to occupy the Channel Islands.

In Bucharest... The Romanian government concedes to Soviet territorial demands presented the previous day, surrendering Bessarabia.

In the United States... In the Republican Party convention at Philadelphia Wendell Willkie is selected as the presidential candidate after the sixth ballot by a margin of 654 to 318 over Senator Taft. The convention is overwhelmingly in favour of a policy of nonintervention in the war.
